NEW RULES FOR TENT INSTALLATIONS ON CAPITOL MALL: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
As of 2024, the City of Sacramento has implemented new requirements that will impact tent installations on Capitol Mall, particularly regarding the use of vehicles on the medians. Under these rules, vehicles are no longer permitted to drive on the medians, requiring significant adjustments to how equipment is delivered, installed, and removed.
THE IMPACT ON THE RENTAL
SOFT LANE CLOSURE OPTION (FACILITATED BY MADE IN THE SHADE)
To comply with these new restrictions, Made in the Shade Tent Rentals will need to conduct a soft closure of one side of Capitol Mall during installation and removal. Preferably, this would involve the westbound lanes, also referred to as North Capitol Mall, to allow for efficient equipment transport. However, this workaround introduces several challenges:
1. Increased Installation and Removal Time:
Since vehicles cannot access the medians, crew members will need to carry equipment longer distances, known as a “long carry,” which adds time to the process.
2. Safety Concerns:
While one side of Capitol Mall will be partially closed, the #2 lane will remain open to traffic. This creates potential safety hazards for our crew, who will be working in proximity to moving vehicles.
3. Impact on Rental Costs:
The additional time and labor required for long carries, combined with traffic control measures, will affect rental costs. Pricing will now depend on several factors:
• The event date – Peak event season (April – June/August – October) creates timing and personnel challenges
• The volume of equipment needed for your event.
• The timing reserved for installation and removal, particularly during peak traffic hours.
FULL LANE CLOSURE OPTION (FACILITATED BY CITY OF SACRAMENTO)
For events requiring larger setups or a safer, more streamlined installation process, we recommend considering a complete road closure of one side of Capitol Mall. This option would allow delivery and pickup vehicles unrestricted access to the site, eliminating the need for long carries and reducing safety risks. However, a full closure will require additional coordination with the City of Sacramento and may incur higher permitting fees.
