OUR STORY

 

 

As a family owned and operated company with deep roots in Northern California, our story isn’t really different from those of our fellow California’s. Made in the Shade began in 1990 as a side business by Nancy & Donald Vasquez. Storage of the tenting equipment, a more traditional or legacy style of tenting manufactured by A & L Products, required quite a bit of space. With little left to invest into a physical location, The Vasquez’s took advantage of the small covered trailer the previous owner used to transport the tents. They also activated their home. Tucked inconspicuously behind a “tilt-up” garage door, located in a track home development in Vacaville, California, Made in the Shade’s new home was also the home to Nancy, Donald, and their three sons, Donny, Chris, and kevin. In 1990 the boys were 12, 11, and 11 months respectably. Over the next 10 years Made in the Shade would grow out of the Vasquez home, moving to a warehouse in Vacaville, then to Fairfield, CA. 

The tent rental industry was still in its infancy. Made in the Shade, unknowingly, had positioned the growth with that of growing population that sought to take advantage of California’s 365 usable days each year. Throughout the 90’s Made in the Shade could be found on the festival circuit throughout the Bay Area, gaining a reputation for being dependable, affordable, and ready to take on the work that was out there.

By 1996, Made in the Shade had a solid team of 10 installers and by the late 1990’s they graduated out of the 10×10, 10×20, and 20×20 tents and purchased their first 30′ wide clear span tent. As demand grew for larger equipment, investments were made in much large pole tents. This changed the game and the trajectory for Made in the Shade. 

Over the next 10 years from 2000 to 2010, Made in the Shade left Fairfield and moved to West Sacramento, CA. Here they could serve the Sacramento region while still maintaining relatively quick access to the Bay Area via I-80. The move to Sacramento was not without hesitation. Sacramento was a market that hadn’t seen much activity for Made in the Shade. In 2003, upon graduating for Sacramento State University, Donny, their oldest son who was now 23, started marketing the company to the many organizations, non-profits, corporations, and athletic centers that call Sacramento home. Some of Made in the Shade’s oldest customers like Bayside Church, Sacramento Running Association (California International Marathon), Visit Sacramento, and more were the result of those initial marketing campaigns. 

Today, Made in the Shade enters the next phase of their story with Donny as CEO and Kevin as COO. Together, they believe that providing quality equipment from manufacturers like Losberger de boer, Aztec Tents, and Rainier Tent and by offering great customer service, with an emphasis on safety and teamwork will be the key to their success. With over 30 employees, including some who have been with Made in the Shade for 20 years, both Donny & Kevin are looking towards the future; their eyes looking up to make sure YOU are covered in more ways than one!
